Testing the equivalence principle by Lamb shift energies.

چکیده
The Einstein Equivalence Principle has as one of its implications that the non-gravitational laws of physics are those of special relativity in any local freely-falling frame. We consider possible tests of this hypothesis for systems whose energies are due to radiative corrections, ie. which arise purely as a consequence of quantum field theoretic loop effects. Specifically, we evaluate the Lamb shift transition (as given by the energy splitting between the 2S1/2 and 2P1/2 atomic states) within the context of violations of local position invariance and local Lorentz invariance, as described by the THǫμ formalism. We compute the associated red shift and time dilation parameters, and discuss how (highprecision) measurements of these quantities could provide new information on the validity of the equivalence principle. We consider possible tests of the Einstein Equivalence Principle for quantum-mechanical vacuum energies by evaluating the Lamb shift transition in a class of non-metric theories of gravity described by the T Hǫµ formalism. We compute to lowest order the associated red shift and time dilation parameters, and discuss how (high-precision) measurements of these quantities could provide new informat...

We consider possible tests of the Einstein Equivalence Principle for physical systems in which quantum-mechanical vacuum energies cannot be neglected. Specific tests include a search for the manifestation of non-metric effects in Lamb-shift transitions of Hydrogenic atoms and in anomalous magnetic moments of massive leptons. We discuss how current experiments already set bounds on the violation...
متن کاملLow-energy effects in brane worlds: Liennard-Wiechert potentials and Hydrogen Lamb shift∗
Testing extra dimensions at low-energies may lead to interesting effects. In this work a test point charge is taken to move uniformly in the 3-dimensional subspace of a (3+n)-brane embedded in a (3+n+1)-space with n compact and one warped infinite spatial extra dimensions. We found that the electromagnetic potentials of the point charge match standard Liennard-Wiechert’s at large distances but ...
متن کاملMeasurement of the nuclear polarization of hydrogen and deuterium molecules using a Lamb-shift polarimeter.
Lamb-shift polarimeters are used to measure the nuclear polarization of protons and deuterons at energies of a few keV. In combination with an ionizer, the polarization of hydrogen and deuterium atoms was determined after taking into account the loss of polarization during the ionization process. The present work shows that the nuclear polarization of hydrogen or deuterium molecules can be meas...
متن کاملOn Testing the Equivalence Principle with Extragalactic Bursts
An interesting test of Einstein’s equivalence principle (EEP) relies on the observed lag in arrival times of photons emitted from extragalactic transient sources. Attributing the lag between photons of different energies to the gravitational potential of the Milky Way (MW), several authors derive new constraints on deviations from EEP. It is shown here that potential fluctuations from the large...
